C3 - Heilbronn - Böckingen NW
June 2, 2023
We had good maps of this Rheinwiesenlager with us, so we thought we could
drive quickly to our destination. The reality was brutal, we had to detour
half the city due to road works, to get to the fields. A large part of the
Rheinwiesenlager fields were full of buildings, but the fields were large
enough, so there was still enough open space left on the fields. We drove
via the Sinsheimerstraße to the beginning of the open fields.
After parking the car and putting on my camera
a woman spoke to me. She asked if I was from the municipality of Heilbronn.
Well no, I'm from the Netherlands. My answer didn't fit her
comprehension. So I told her that I was just a bit curious. Then it was
alright.
Due to the diversions in the city, extended buses thundered (harmonica
buses) and large trucks over the much too narrow country roads.

I knew I was almost in the middle of the Rheinwiesenlager fields.
In a prayer for the people who died in the Rheinwiesenlager,
I have asked God, our Lord and the Almighty to help these deceased
with Love, Light and Peace and thereby to soften their suffering.
We drove back a bit in the Sinsheimerstraße. Between a parking lot and
a small number of shops we found a memorial (commemorative plaque).
The image below shows a bronze map of the Rheinwiesenlager, which was
considerably larger than the current residential area. See also below the
city map of 2024.
